Our focus is on understanding protective mechanisms in mucosal barrier protection in the gut and how compromised responses damage the host, and alter immune responses and host-microbiota communication. This project will investigate gastrointestinal inflammation in genetically modified mouse models with emphasis on cytoskeletal regulators. Various colitis inducers will be used to study epithelial and immune cell responses and their interaction with indigenous or altered microbiota. Close connections to clinicians will permit bed-to-bench assessments. Multi-facetted in vivo methods as well as high resolution imaging, flow cytometry, and analytical/enzymatic/microbiological methods will be required for the project.
